| Tommy goes down in quarter finals |
Tommy has lost in the quarter finals of the PSA Quito Open 2005 in Ecuador. After winning his first round comfortably 11-1, 11-2, 11-2 against Armando Olguin from Mexico, Tommy faced Colombian champion Bernardo Samper in his second match in this Super Satellite tournament. As a result of a lack of match play Tommy struggled to find his rhythm in the first game. After his first game loss Tommy found his rhythm and won the next two games 11-8, 11-5 to take a 2-1 lead. However the fourth game quickly slipped away from Tommy, so that the fifth game had to bring the decision. This final game was nail and tuck all the way and proved to be a real classic. Tommy took a 9-7 lead, but a few minutes later found himself 10-9 down. Tommy won the next two points to reach match ball, but in the end couldn’t capitalize and went down 13-11 in the fifth game.
‘I can’t really be too disappointed about my loss. It was my first competitive match in four months and in the beginning I really had to find my rhythm again. However after the first game I played decent squash and I am satisfied with my performance. Playing at 2.800 meters altitude proved to be very tough, but in the end Bernardo just played the big points better. Bernardo is a good player, especially at altitude which he is used to coming from Colombia. But I am glad that my body held up decently and I am looking forward to continue my training to get back to my best form.’
The second Dutch player in the draw, Tom Hoevenaars, lost out in the first round of the Quito Open. Hoevenaars took the first game against Manuel Fregoso, but couldn’t keep up the pace. The altitude proved to be too tough for Tom as he went down 3-1 to his Mexican opponent.
